Wyse Technology Expands Installation of Winterm Thin Appliances at Dreyer Medical Clinic

Dreyer Medical Adds New Winterm 1200LE Thin Appliances To Existing Wyse Thin Appliance Environment to Help Physicians Gain Secure Access To Patient Records

Wyse Technology, the worldwide leader in thin-appliance computing, today announced that Dreyer Medical Clinic, one of the top medical practices in northern Illinois, is in the process of deploying 400 Wyse Winterm™ thin appliances with plans to deploy an additional 200 units over the coming months. Dreyer Clinic is deploying the Wyse Winterm 1200LE thin appliances in a move toward a paperless system of accessing and storing medical records.

The Wyse Winterm devices will replace green-screen terminals in the exam rooms, nurses' stations and procedure rooms, providing physicians with access to up-to-date patient medical records. Healthcare providers are moving towards modernization of their computing systems--but not at the expense of patient data security and new applications that require a modern desktop device. Dreyer Medical Clinic decided to implement a Web-based Electronic Medical Records (EMR) application and therefore needed to replace a significant number of green-screen terminals with a modern desktop device. Thin appliances are silent, have low emissions, are durable and have low electricity usage so they are a good choice for the healthcare environment. Thin appliances are also a cost effective alternative to the PC as they have no moving parts that can break down or lose data, and deliver greater data security and virus resistance.

"We have heard horror stories here at Wyse where laptops with sensitive medical information have been stolen from hospitals," said George Skaff, vice president of worldwide marketing, Wyse Technology. "In 1996 the US Congress passed the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA), which requires healthcare providers to electronically transmit administrative transactions to streamline the communications process. The government also requires that the data transfer be secure and private. For this very reason thin appliances provide the most secure offering for the healthcare industry as information is stored on the server and not on the thin appliance so there is no security risk."

With the use of the Winterm 1200LEs physicians will no longer have to carry around cumbersome medical charts to each exam room. Instead, all of the patient's information will be assessable via the Wyse thin-appliance desktop, while the information remains safe on a secure, centralized server. The Winterm 1200LE is a simple terminal for those who need a completely centralized desktop management option. Because the Winterm 1200LE is a completely stateless device, all of the terminal's settings are saved on the server, allowing for more control over the desktop experience. The display-based operating system provides optimized ICA performance, and with all terminal management performed at the server (using existing database programs), it is the most easily managed thin client.

"We have previously used Wyse Winterm thin appliances, like the Winterm 3000 models, and were extremely pleased with their performance," said Stephen Hart, MCSE, MCP+I, CCNA, CCDA, systems/network administrator, Dreyer Medical Clinic. "When it came time to replace the green-screen terminals at the nurses' station and add additional thin appliances to exam and procedure rooms, we decided to use the Wyse Winterm 1200LEs because they deliver greater security and virus resistance and won't break down or lose data. Thin appliances provide ease of deployment, centralized management and network utilization we couldn't get by installing PCs."

Wyse thin appliances have made a significant impact in the healthcare community at businesses such as Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Holston Medical Group, PSS World Medical, Shared Medical Systems and Quantum Southwest Management. Winterm thin appliances are economical, easy to set up and use, and offer members of the medical community information when they need it, where they need it. Chief information officers (CIOs) have exponentially reduced their information technology costs and saved hundreds of thousands of dollars with the installation of Wyse thin appliances.
